Educational Services for Grades 4 & 5
Learning Strategy Instruction
for children in 4th & 5th grades is designed to help upper elementary children develop more efficient learning strategies. The program teaches strategies to guide processing and support skill development in vocabulary, reading, spelling, writing, math, listening and note-taking when reading fiction and non-fiction.
The strategies are taught using direct instruction for the child as well as parent so on-going support for the use of the strategies can be provided at home. The program includes 4 hours of instruction, and a manual. Templates are developed so Quizlet and other computer systems can be used.
Vocabulary Development Program
builds a stronger base of word knowledge, which is essential to understand language (written or oral) and to communicate with others. The increased time spent on “screens” can result in reduced exposure to a wide range of words. The program will increase vocabulary to support reading, writing and listening. The program includes 1/2 hour of instruction and the development of templates if other computer systems need to be used (such as Quizlet).
Writing Skills Program develops stronger skills to enable 4th & 5th graders to express their ideas in writing. The sessions will clearly identify the basic goals of writing and will include instruction in understanding the functions of basic grammar, Reverse Diagramming, Upgrade Proofing and Cloze writing activities. The program includes 3 one-hour sessions of instruction. Templates are developed so other programs, such as Word, can be also be used.
Reverse Diagramming instruction is designed to improve reading fluency and written expression. In Reverse Diagramming, the student must organize sentences according to visual models called sentence grids. An initial training session is required and on-going monitoring can be done by the child's parent. The fee includes the instruction and a manual.
Wordstorming is a user-friendly literacy program. Each lesson includes decoding, word attack/segmentation, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and reading fluency. An initial 3 hour training is required with one follow-up meeting to make sure the program is being used correctly. The program includes the instruction and the workbooks.
Individual sessions are available for parent consultation, self-monitoring instruction and time management/organization.
